Hospital bag for a baby who stays longer: what actually helps

Hospital bag for a baby who stays longer: what actually helps

When you pack a bag for the maternity ward, you think of a few days. When a baby needs complex care, the stay can be much longer, and sometimes they come back several times. At A&Y, we have lived those hospital corridors with Adam, then with Yahya. Here is what helped us day to day.

These ideas come from our experience as parents. They never replace the instructions of the medical team that follows your child.

Start by asking the care team

Every unit has its rules: what is allowed in the bed, the accepted products, the clothing suited to care. A simple question to the nurse before buying anything will save you waste and stress.

Clothes that are easy to put on, and easy to open

When you change baby often and tubing or sensors are in place, every bit of handling counts. Plan several changes, because you will use more than you expect. Choose materials that are gentle on sensitive skin, such as organic cotton, and models that open without undoing everything.

A baby blanket and a comforter that smell like home

A small muslin blanket, washed at home, creates a familiar anchor in a hospital room. Always remove comforters and blankets from baby’s sleep space, as the safe sleep guidelines require, and follow the unit’s rules.

Think of yourself too

A long charger, a water bottle, snacks, a small bag for your own clothes. Parents often forget to plan for themselves. It is not a detail: you are holding on for your child.

Keep a simple list on your phone

The names of medications, the unit’s numbers, the questions to ask at the next follow-up. When you are exhausted, writing everything down means you do not have to remember it all.

Why we are creating ZEM

Those long weeks showed us that a clothing detail can change a task repeated every day. That is why we are developing ZEM, a collection of adaptive clothing for babies with a G-tube or complex care. The ZEM Sack is now available for pre-order; the bodysuit and the romper remain in development and are not yet for sale. You can discover the ZEM models and give your opinion, or see the ZEM Sack pre-order page for the sizes and shipping terms.

10% of sales of A&Y products are donated to the CHU Sainte-Justine Foundation, until September 15, 2027.
